Early Sensation Clematis This compact, evergreen variety is great for small balconies, and for squeezing into narrow, sunny spaces. It's also excellent trailing through deciduous trees and shrubs or as a ground-cover plant.
Early Sensation's flowers are greenish when they open in April, maturing to pure white and it has pretty finely divided leaves, starting off bronze and maturing to green; the flowers are followed by fluffy seedheads. Unlike most clematis, it's not self-supporting and shouldn't grow much more than 2 metres.

Ideal grown up a fence, wall or over an arbour, where its spectacular white cup-shaped flowers create real impact in the spring. It doesn't naturally attach itself to supports, so will need to be tied onto a trellis or wires. It's well suited for growing in a large container providing it's kept well watered and fed.
Spring-flowering clematis work well taking on the mantle before climbers that flower later in the season such as honeysuckle and jasmine. 'Early Sensation' makes a great backdrop for a white garden, complementing daffodils like 'Thalia' and 'Toto' and other spring flowers such as Hyacinth Carnegie White.
This cultivar was bred by Graham Hutchins of County Park Nursery, Essex.
