Golden Jubilee is a warm golden yellow Hybrid Tea with apricot tones, large double high-centred blooms and moderate sweet, fruity fragrance. Bred by Cocker in Scotland in 1981 to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee, this is a classically structured rose with excellent vigour and reliable repeat-flowering through the season.
Golden Jubilee, a Historic Rose of Warmth and Charm
Named to mark the Golden Jubilee celebrations of 1977, Golden Jubilee was released by the Scottish breeder Cocker in 1981. It has proven itself a dependable garden rose with genuine warmth in its colouring. The large, high-centred double blooms open from handsome buds with that unmistakable golden yellow colouring that deepens towards apricot at the petal edges. There is real substance to the flower form, making it as rewarding in the garden as it is in a vase.
This rose reaches around 100cm in height and develops good vigour over time. It flowers from June through to the first frosts, with reliable repeat-flushes throughout the season. The moderate fragrance is sweet and fruity, the kind that rewards you when you lean in close. It is not a powerhouse scented rose, but the aroma is genuine and pleasant. In borders or as a specimen planting, Golden Jubilee brings consistent colour and structure, especially valued for its ability to produce exhibition-quality blooms year after year.
This is a rose for gardeners who appreciate historical varieties with proven garden performance. It does not demand pampering and responds well to standard rose cultivation. Full sun will give the best flower colour and disease resilience, though it tolerates partial shade reasonably well. Like all Hybrid Teas, it benefits from regular deadheading to encourage continuous flowering and from winter pruning to maintain an open goblet shape.
Cut Flowers and Garden Display
Golden Jubilee's large double blooms and long stems make it a natural choice for cut flowers. Pick them when the outer petals begin to reflex and they will open beautifully indoors over several days. The colour holds well in water, and the moderate fragrance brings quiet elegance to a room. In the garden, the repeat-flowering means you can cut regularly without sacrificing the display.
The bloom form is classic Hybrid Tea: the high centre develops slowly from a pointed bud, opening to reveal a perfectly balanced, full flower. This structure appeals to rose enthusiasts and flower arrangers alike. Combined with the warm golden colouring, Golden Jubilee has everything needed for a special cutting rose.
Growing Golden Jubilee Successfully
Plant in full sun in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Space at least 60cm from neighbouring plants to allow air circulation. Water deeply during dry spells and feed with a balanced rose fertiliser in spring, then switch to a potash-rich feed from mid-summer onwards to encourage flowering and harden growth for winter. Prune in late winter or early spring, removing dead or diseased wood and cutting back the remaining canes to about half their height, opening the centre of the plant. Deadhead spent flowers throughout the season unless you wish to collect hips for late-season interest.
Companion Plants for Golden Hybrid Tea Roses
Golden Jubilee sits beautifully alongside soft blues and purples. Try it with lavender for a cottage garden feel, or pair it with tall clematis trained onto a wall behind. Summer-flowering alliums provide textural contrast, while soft herbaceous perennials like catmint and salvias echo the rose's gentle colouring without competing for attention. Frequently Asked Questions
When should I plant Golden Jubilee?
Plant bare-root roses between November and March while dormant. Potted plants can go in at any time, though spring and autumn are ideal. Prepare the planting hole with compost and blood, fish and bone meal.
How often will Golden Jubilee flower?
This is a repeat-flowering Hybrid Tea, producing blooms from June through to October. Regular deadheading and feeding encourage more flushes. Expect at least three good rounds of flowers in a healthy season.
Does Golden Jubilee need a lot of pruning?
Prune in late winter to early spring, cutting back to about half height and removing dead wood. Summer pruning is simply deadheading and light tidying. See our detailed pruning guide for step-by-step advice.
What size will Golden Jubilee reach?
Golden Jubilee typically reaches 100cm (3.5ft) in height and spreads 60-75cm. It is a vigorous, upright Hybrid Tea that can be shaped by pruning to suit your space and design.
Is Golden Jubilee fragrant?
Yes, it has a moderate fragrance that is sweet and fruity. While not as intensely scented as some varieties, it offers genuine scent that rewards a close sniff. Consider our scented rose collection for stronger perfumes.
