When snowdrops wind down in March, their larger cousins arrive. Gravetye Giant is a summer snowflake — despite the name, it flowers in spring — and at 90cm it towers over anything a true snowdrop could manage. The flowers are white bells with distinctive green marks around the rims, hanging in clusters from arching stems. The overall effect is graceful and architectural, like an oversized lily of the valley.
The RHS AGM confirms reliable garden performance. Gravetye Giant naturalises well in damp, humus-rich soil — along a stream bank, in a damp meadow, or at the foot of a hedge where the soil stays moist. It belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family, the same as snowdrops and daffodils.
Plant along a stream or pond edge, or in a damp border with snowdrops (earlier, shorter) and snake's head fritillaries (similar conditions). Browse the bulb collection.

No — it is a snowflake (Leucojum), a different genus from snowdrops (Galanthus). The flowers are similar but larger, and the petals are all the same length with green tips. True snowdrops have three short inner and three longer outer petals.
It thrives in it. Unlike most bulbs, summer snowflakes prefer moist, humus-rich ground. Stream banks, pond margins, and damp meadows are ideal. Avoid dry, sandy positions.
