Bulb Lasagne – Layer Different Bulbs for Months of Colour From One Pot

A bulb lasagne is simply different types of bulb planted in layers in the same pot — large bulbs deep, small bulbs shallow, like layers of pasta. The result is a dense, long-lasting display that erupts in stages: crocuses first, then daffodils or hyacinths, then tulips on top. One well-planted container can flower from February through to May.

We offer single-colour packs (white, pink) and mixed-colour recipes (yellow and blue). Choose the palette that suits your front door, your patio, or your borders. The packs contain the right proportions of each bulb type for a balanced lasagne — you just need a large pot (at least 30cm across and deep), some multi-purpose compost, and twenty minutes.

Plant the largest bulbs (tulips) at the bottom, 15cm deep. Add a layer of compost. Plant mid-sized bulbs (daffodils, hyacinths) next, 10cm deep. Another layer of compost. Small bulbs (crocuses, muscari) on top, 5cm deep. Water once and leave outdoors. The layers flower in sequence from the top down.

Why Ashridge?

Your bulbs are premium-size, Dutch-grown, and hand-graded before dispatch. Bigger bulbs store more energy, which means more flowers. We select the best varieties available at the time of dispatch. Delivered in autumn, ready to plant. If anything arrives soft or damaged, call Somerset and we replace it. Which? Best Plant Supplier. Browse all our flower bulbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big a pot do I need?

At least 30cm across and 30cm deep — bigger is better. The more compost the bulbs have, the stronger the flowers. A half-barrel or a large terracotta pot works well. Drainage holes are essential.

Can I do a bulb lasagne in the ground?

Absolutely. Dig a planting hole 20cm deep and wide enough for your chosen arrangement. Layer the bulbs just as you would in a pot. The effect in a border is a concentrated burst of colour that lasts for months.

Will the bulbs come back next year?

In the ground, most will perennialise. In a pot, the tulips may not return reliably (they exhaust the compost), but the daffodils and crocuses usually do. Many gardeners replant the top tulip layer each autumn and leave the lower layers in place.
