Siberian Squill – Brilliant Blue Stars for Woodland and Borders

From a distance, Siberian Squill looks like a blue snowdrop — small, nodding, early. Up close, the flowers are upturned six-pointed stars in a brilliant, intense blue that very few spring bulbs can match. They flower in March and April, just as snowdrops are finishing, and naturalise easily in any well-drained soil. A carpet of Scilla siberica under a deciduous tree is one of spring's great sights.

The name is misleading — their native range extends from Europe into Russia but not as far north as Siberia. At 15–20cm, they belong in rockeries, the front of borders, under trees and hedges, or anywhere you want a low wash of blue. The RHS AGM confirms their reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Siberian Squill naturalise?

Prolifically. It spreads by self-seeding and by offsets, gradually forming carpets in suitable conditions. Well-drained soil under deciduous trees is ideal — the bulbs get winter moisture and spring light, then go dormant under the summer canopy.

Is the blue colour really that intense?

Genuinely vivid. Scilla siberica is one of the bluest spring flowers — a pure, saturated blue with no hint of purple or mauve. The colour is strongest in partial shade.

Does Siberian Squill have an AGM?

Yes — RHS Award of Garden Merit, confirming reliable performance across UK conditions.
