Stresa Tulip – Dwarf, Striped, and One of the First

Stresa is a dwarf tulip that flowers in March and April — weeks ahead of the big hybrids. The blooms are bright yellow with neat crimson stripes on the outer petals, bold enough to catch the eye from across a border despite the small stature. At just 20cm, it belongs at the front of a bed, in a rockery, or in a windowsill container where the detail can be appreciated up close.

These are among the most reliable perennial tulips. The Kaufmanniana and Greigii types were bred from wild species and retain that genetic toughness — they come back year after year in most soils, multiplying gradually. If you want tulips you can plant once and forget about, this is the group to choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Stresa tulips perennial?

Among the most reliable. Species-type tulips like Stresa come back year after year and gradually multiply. Leave the foliage to die back naturally after flowering, and they will reward you for many seasons.

When does Stresa flower?

March to April — one of the earliest tulips. In a sheltered spot or mild winter, flowers can appear in late February. They bridge the gap between crocuses and the main tulip season.

Can I grow Stresa in a rockery?

Ideal for rockeries. The 20cm height, strong stems, and tolerance of well-drained soil make it a natural choice. Plant among low-growing alpines for a colourful spring display.
