Sweetness Daffodil – Golden Jonquil With a Rich Scent

Sweetness is a single-flowered jonquil — Division 7, which tells you three things immediately. The flowers are richly golden yellow, the scent is genuinely sweet (the jonquils are the fragrant aristocrats of the narcissus world), and the plant is elegant rather than blowsy. The petals are slightly pointed, giving each bloom a poise that the bolder trumpet daffodils lack.

Somewhat taller than other jonquils at 35cm, Sweetness works as a cutting flower as well as a garden plant. The combination of colour, scent, and long-standing hardiness has earned it recognition over many decades — this is a heritage variety that has proved itself in gardens across Europe. It naturalises reliably in grass and good soil.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a jonquil daffodil?

Jonquils (Division 7) are a group of narcissi descended from Narcissus jonquilla. They are smaller and more elegant than trumpet daffodils, typically multi-headed, and significantly more fragrant. The foliage is narrow and rush-like.

Will Sweetness naturalise?

Well. Jonquils are reliable perennials that increase steadily in good soil. Leave the foliage to die back for six weeks after flowering. In grass, delay mowing until mid-June.

Is Sweetness good for cutting?

Excellent. The rich scent fills a room, and the elegant pointed petals look more refined than the big trumpet types in a vase. Cut when the first bud on the stem opens.
