Betula Varieties in Standard Sizes
Birch trees, the Betula family, are among the most elegant trees in the UK. As a family, they are fast growing, and do well on both poor soils and damp sites as long as they are sunny.
Their bark tends to come in hues of silver (Betula pendula), white (Betula papyrifera) or sometimes pinkish white (Betula utilis jacquemontii). They only cast light shade, so they are among the best choices if you want to garden under them. They are often used as "nurse trees" in forestry or woodland garden planting schemes to shelter and improve conditions for other, slower growing trees.
Standard trees are measured by their girth 1 metre above the ground, and young saplings are measured by height. Therefore, a 6/8cm Standard Birch tree is much bigger than an 60/80cm Birch sapling tree or hedge plant. If a tree is available in both sizes, it will be noted in the product descriptions.
