Leylandii Hedge Plants - Delivered by Mail Order from the Nursery with a 1 Year Guarantee

Leylandii or Leyland Cypress, Cupressocyparis leylandii, is the world's most vigorous coniferous tree. A Leylandii hedge is great for creating privacy in a hurry and a row of mature Leylandii trees can easily conceal a ten storey house. It has quite a narrow, evergreen canopy and mature, unclipped plants have a columnar shape.
Leylandii can grow up to about 40 metres high and it should get there in less than 40 years.
Leylandii is great for really tall screening. Please bear in mind that if you want to maintain your Leylandii as a normal sized hedge, you must clip it twice a year, every year. If that sounds too high maintenance, we suggest that you have a look at Yew. You can buy it more cheaply and it will be easier for you to look after in the long run.

Leylandii hedging is only delivered pot-grown, year round.
All our hedge plants are measured by their height in centimetres above the ground (the pots aren't measured).

Spacing a Leylandii hedge:
Plant Leylandii hedging at 60-150cms apart. Plant it closer together if you intend to keep it trimmed as a hedge. Plant it further apart if you are going to let them grow freely into a screen of trees.

General description of Leylandii plants:
The Leyland Cypress, Cupressocyparis leylandii, is one of the world's fastest growing evergreens, possibly beaten only by Eucalyptus. They are magnificent trees, with flat leaves that spray upwards in wide fronds and they naturally form a grand, tapering column.
The Cypress Aphid seems not to have a taste for Leylandii.

History & uses of Cupressocyparis leylandii
It was created by chance, when two different American species of Cypress (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis and Cupressus macrocarpa) that never normally meet in the wild were brought into contact with each other in Wales. The first occurrence of this curious hybrid was recorded in 1888 and by 1911, when some more were discovered, it had become clear that a very special tree had come into being. In the right conditions, Leylandii can top a metre of growth each and every year, which is almost unheard of for a conifer - only the giant redwoods come close. The wood is high quality structural timber and its rate of growth makes it very attractive commercially. These trees have almost no natural enemies (stressed trees can develop bacterial cankers but this only tends to happen if they have been cut back too hard or become very dehydrated).

A Leylandii hedge can get so big that the The High Hedges Act was drawn up specifically to give people legal recourse against neighbours who let their Leylandii get out of hand (though the law can apply to any evergreen hedge over two metres tall, it was not until this tree became so popular that the law became necessary).
