Most trees have their moment — the cherry going full confetti in April, an acer doing its best Turner impression come October. The finest ornamental trees are generous enough to put on a show right round the calendar. We look for the ones that earn their keep through January's bare architecture, March's hopeful bud-burst, the full glorious canopy of high summer, and that splendid autumn finale of colour and fruit.
