Small World: A White Pompon That Keeps Flowering Through Anything

If you've been burned by dahlias collapsing in the rain, Small World is the answer. It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and the reason is weather tolerance. The small, tight pompon flowers are light enough not to catch wind, structured enough not to hold water, and produced on sturdy stems that stay upright when bigger varieties around them are listing sideways. It just keeps going.

The colour is a clean milky white that develops subtle burgundy flecks and wine-tipped petals as the season progresses into autumn. By October you'll have a mix of pure white and faintly wine-touched blooms on the same plant, which gives it a warmer, more interesting look than a fixed white.

At 110cm it's taller than most pompons, with a 60cm spread and masses of those neat little spheres from July right through to the frosts. The flowers cut beautifully and look particularly good mixed with larger, darker blooms in an arrangement, where the white pompons act as visual breathing space between the richer colours.

Placing Small World

White goes with everything, but Small World really shines next to dark colours where the contrast is sharpest. Plant alongside Dark Spirit (near-black decorative, 90cm) for a dramatic pairing: light and dark, small spheres and larger blooms. The deep purple of Moor Place (burgundy pompon, same form but different colour) makes a natural companion within the same type. For a warmer scheme, the orange ball of Sylvia (80cm, brown stems) provides autumn warmth against the white. Japanese anemones are a natural seasonal partner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Small World really that weather-tolerant?

It's one of the most weather-resistant dahlias we sell. The small, tightly structured flowers don't hold rainwater the way large decorative types do, and the stems are strong enough to handle wind. In a wet British summer, that's not a trivial advantage. The AGM confirms it performs reliably across a wide range of UK conditions, including the wet ones.

Is Small World good for cutting?

Very. The small white pompons are perfect for mixed arrangements, where they act as breathing space between larger, bolder blooms. Try them with Rip City (deep red semi-cactus spikes) or Cornel (maroon ball) for dark-and-light impact. Only pick fully open flowers.

Will Small World grow in a pot?

At 110cm it's taller than ideal for a container, but the small flowers and sturdy habit make it manageable in a large pot (at least 35cm across and deep). It won't be as productive as in open ground, but it'll give you a good show. For a white dahlia that's truly container-sized, Boom Boom White (100cm ball) is a slightly more compact alternative. Our container guide has more detail.

Is Small World a pompon or a ball dahlia?

It sits on the borderline. The flower size ranges from 4 to 7cm, and the dividing line between pompon (under 5cm) and ball (5 to 15cm) runs right through its range. Most catalogues list it as a pompon because the smaller blooms predominate. The form is the same either way: tightly spiralled petals building to a globe. Our dahlia classification guide explains the system.

Do the burgundy flecks appear on every plant?

They tend to develop as the nights get cooler, typically from September onwards. Early-season flowers in July and August are usually a clean milky white. The wine tips and flecks come later and vary in intensity from year to year. If you want consistent pure white all season, Boom Boom White stays true. Growing and seasonal care advice is in our dahlia growing guide.
