Description

Rheum Hybridum Sutton Rhubarb Plants

Description of The Sutton Rhubarb Plants:
The Sutton is one of the heaviest yielding rhubarbs, with heavy yields of solid quality stems. Also known as Suttons Seedless this rhubarb is a mid-season cropper, best harvested in May or perhaps June in the North.

Growing The Sutton:

As with all rhubarb, deep, rich soil with good drainage is important. Rhubarb roots grow deep so good preparation pays dividends - dig in plenty of well rotted manure and/or compost before planting. If rhubarb crowns get too damp in winter, they will rot and die, so if there is any doubt over drainage mound the rhubarb bed so the crowns are above ground level. Never cover them with mulch.

The ideal soil for rhubarb is neutral to slightly acidic; it will tolerate quite acidic soil, but yields will be smaller. Chalk or limestone soils are less suitable and need more improvement.

Spacing: The Sutton rhubarb is a big plant so increase spacing a bit and plant about 110 cm apart in a sunny position as rhubarb hates the shade.
