Description

Prunus Summer Sun - Late Season

Description of Summer Sun Trees & Cherries:

Big, sweet, dark eating cherries with firm, slightly crunchy flesh.

Summer Sun is a reliable cherry tree that will still crop well after a gloomy summer. It is also recommended for cold, frosty spots.
It is quite a compact tree, suitable for small gardens.

Browse our range of cherry trees or the full variety of fruit trees.

Features:

  • Almost Self fertile.
  • Pollination Group D.
  • Frost resistant.
  • Recommended for the North and Scotland.
  • Crops in Late July.
  • Stores well.

Pollination Partners for Summer Sun Cherries:
Summer Sun is, strictly speaking, partially self fertile. It will make fruit all by itself, but better crops with a partner.
It is in pollination group D, so it can pollinate almost all the cherry trees we grow: any tree in group C,D or E of the cherry tree pollinating table.

According to the RHS, ‘Stella’, ‘Van’ or ‘Lapins’ are especially good partners. Stella is one of the most common cherry trees in the UK, so there's a good chance one will be local.

Rootstocks:
Our Summer Sun cherry trees are all grown on "Colt" rootstocks.
Maximum height 4 metres.

Growing Summer Sun Cherry Trees:
Rich soil is important - dig in plenty of good manure and compost before planting.
Soil drainage must be good.
The more sun your trees get the better your crops will be.
Cherry trees are targets for birds, so netting them is a good idea.
Only prune cherries in summer.

Details about delivery sizes: Guide to Fruit Tree Sizing.

History & Parentage of Summer Sun:
A Norfolk variety, it has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

7.5 - 12 litre Potted Trees: These trees are not meant to be kept in pots. They will be fine for up to 12 months (until planted in the ground) as long as they are well watered (but not over watered).
