Mick's Peppermint: A Striped Giant with Spiky Petals

Mick's Peppermint is a semi-cactus dahlia with white petals boldly streaked with bright purple-pink. At 25cm across on a 120cm plant, it's a big, dramatic flower with the added visual complexity of the striped pattern on spiky, recurved petals. No two blooms are identical.

It needs staking at this height, and shelter from wind helps. The semi-cactus form sheds rain better than flat decorative types, which is an advantage with flowers this large. Strong stems make it a good cutter.

Where to Plant Mick's Peppermint

Striped flowers need simple neighbours. White Swan (pure white, 120cm) provides a clean backdrop. Dark Spirit (near-black, 90cm in front) anchors the scheme. Keep the planting around it calm so the striped pattern is the star.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Mick's Peppermint compare to Cafe au Lait Twist?

Cafe au Lait Twist is a ruffled dinnerplate with raspberry streaks over cream. Mick's Peppermint is a spiky semi-cactus with purple-pink streaks over white. Both are striped, both are big. Twist is softer and more romantic. Peppermint is bolder and more graphic.

Will Mick's Peppermint grow in a pot?

At 120cm with 25cm flowers, it's too big for a container. Grow it in deep border soil with staking. For a striped dahlia that suits pots, Checkers is more compact. Our pots guide covers the options.

Is the striping predictable?

Each flower is different. Some are lightly marked, others heavily striped. This unpredictability is characteristic of striped dahlia sports. Full growing advice in our dahlia growing guide.
