Waltzing Mathilda is a compact dahlia with warm peach-orange and red flowers in an unusual anemone/collarette form. At 75cm tall and 75cm wide, it makes a bushy, generous plant that fills its space without needing much support. The RHS AGM confirms it performs reliably across a wide range of UK conditions.
The open flower form with its visible centre makes it better for pollinators than fully double dahlias. Named after the famous Australian bush ballad (with an extra 'h' in Mathilda), it has an easygoing, cheerful quality that suits cottage gardens and containers. It flowers from July to November.
The warm peach-orange works in cottage garden schemes. Plant alongside Pooh (red and yellow collarette, 90cm) for two open-centred, pollinator-friendly dahlias in warm colours. Rocco (fuchsia pompon, 75cm, same height) adds a contrasting purple. Soft grasses and Helenium complete the picture.

The RHS Award of Garden Merit recognises reliable garden performance across a range of UK conditions. Waltzing Mathilda earns it through consistent flowering, disease resistance, and an easygoing habit that doesn't demand much attention.
Yes. The open flower form with a visible central disc gives pollinators easy access. It's one of the better dahlia types for wildlife gardens.
At 75cm with a bushy habit, it's well suited to a container of at least 25cm across. No staking needed in a sheltered spot. Our container guide has the detail. Full growing advice in our dahlia growing guide.
