Growing Avalanche

Ideal grown up a fence, wall or over an arbour, where its spectacular white flowers create real impact in the spring. It does not naturally attach itself to supports, so will need to be tied onto a trellis or wires. With its evergreen foliage providing year-round interest, it is also excellent trailing through deciduous trees and shrubs or as a ground cover plant. It is well suited for growing in a large container providing it is kept well watered and fed.

Planting Companions

Spring-flowering clematis pair well with climbers that flower later in the season such as honeysuckle and jasmine. Avalanche makes a great backdrop for a white garden, complementing daffodils like Thalia and Toto and other spring flowers such as Hyacinth White Pearl and Anemone White Splendour.

Did You Know?

Named after botanist Joe Cartman who raised it, C. x cartmanii was bred from the New Zealand clematis species: C. marmoraria and C. paniculata. This cultivar was bred at Blackthorn Nursery in Leighton Buzzard by Robin White, and originally registered under the code BLAaval.
