About Rouge Cardinal Clematis:
Red Cardinal is a vigorous variety of clematis producing a stunning show of deep crimson, almost purple flowers (hence the name) with deep cut midribs and pale cream anthers. They're quite a size too, the first flush reaching around 15cm in diameter. These are produced in profusion through summer and into autumn and are followed by lovely spindly seed heads.

Garden Design Ideas
'Rouge Cardinal' is a nice strong growing vigorous variety. This makes it perfect for covering large frames such as trellises, pergolas and archways. It looks really nice when grown through other climbers, especially roses, although it looks great growing through a larger shrub (as a suggestion try it in Philadelphus Belle Etoile or Virginal).
Being a strong grower that likes partial shade it's a great choice for growing through a host tree. You can also let it ramble through a large shrub in the border.

History & Trivia
Rouge Cardinal was bred in 1968 by Alexandre Girault of Orléans, France, who is a lot better known for his contributions to rose breeding. The parents were Ville de Lyon and Pourpre Mat.
If you want a college of Cardinals, or at least a trio, we also grow a Cardinal Royal rowan tree, and a Cardinal de Richelieu rose bush.
