About 'Elsa Spath' Clematis:

'Elsa Spath' Clematis is widely thought to be one of the finest blue clematis ever developed. It is a stunning variety producing a profusion of large blue-purple flowers with beautiful paler violet bars and striking anthers, which fade from plum red to pale cream.
They flower continuously from late spring to early autumn, bringing a valuable shock of colour to the summer garden.

If 'Elsa Spath' isn't quite what you're looking for you can view our full range of Clematis here.

Great for your garden:

'Elsa Spath' prefers a nice sheltered position in sun or partial shade. It is a versatile clematis, and despite being pretty vigorous can still be planted in containers and so enjoyed in even the smallest of gardens.

It's a brilliant choice for growing up over a trellis or pergola, and can make a wonderful companion for other climbers such as roses. Due to its vigour it can be planted at the base of a small tree and trained to ramble through its branches, which can look really stunning.

It is such a strong performer in the garden that is has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

    Trivia:

'Elsa Spath' was introduced in 1891 by Franz Ludwig Spath.

The Spath family owned one of the worlds best known and prestigious nurseries of the 19th and 20th Centuries, situated in the Baumschulenweg district of Berlin. The nursery remained in the family until 1945 when Spaths son Helmut was very sadly executed by the Nazis for speaking out against the regime.
