How to Pot Up a "Bulb Lasagne" for Successive Flowering All Spring

A bulb lasagne is a pot of bulbs planted in layers. Here’s a sample recipe - a 30cm (12”) deep pot is best but remove layers if it is shallower:

  • 5 - 10cms (2-4”) of compost potting soil leaving 20 - 25cms (8-10”) of pot empty
  • A layer of late spring flowerers such as late daffs or tulips
  • Add 5 - 7cms (2-3”) compost
  • Maybe a layer of hyacinths or earlier tulips. Aim for March April flowers
  • Add another 5 - 7cms (2-3”) compost
  • A layer of early flowering bulbs such as snowdrops and/or crocus.
  • Cover with 5 - 7cms (2-3”) compost
  • Water well and enjoy

Right, today we're going to plant a bulb lasagne. So, got a tall, deep pot, and we're going to plant the bulbs in layers. They'll come up, and they'll flower in succession. We've got our pot, we've got our bulbs. We've got seven daffodils, Cheerfulness. We've got two types of tall Tulip, we've got Paul Scherer and Diana. Smaller Tulips, which flower earlier. So that's Heart's Delight.

And then on top of that, the next ones, we're going to plant are Crocuses and Snowdrops. Snowdrops will obviously flower first, and Crocuses a couple of days later. So if you never sure which way up is, plant it on its side, but daffodils and Tulips easy. That's the top. That's where the leaves and the flowers will come out.

That's the bottom where the roots will come out. So, you plant them straight to the compost like that, just push it in. Tulips are the same, teardrop shaped bulb. That's where the roots will come out, the basal plate there. And that's where the shoot will come out. And then snowdrops, and smaller bulbs, if you're never sure, just plant it on its side. So, we've got our bulbs, pot, and we've got compost, good quality compost, and then we'll start filling it up. So get your pot, fill it up about halfway, two lots of tall (Tulips), these are 40 to 50cm high, and then just mix these up a bit, so you don't get all white on one side and all maroon on the other. A bit more compost on the top. Just press them down. If they're on top of each other, it won't matter that much because they'll just grow around the bulbs. Another layer of compost, firm it down a bit, plant them the right way up.

And then another layer of compost, press it down again. They look fairly natural. Few Snowdrops in there mixed in as well.

And then just top it off, bit more compost.

Just leave a little lip when you fill it up, it'll hold the water. Don't forget to water it after you planted it, give it a good soak. Fill this up, fill it up again, and let it soak in again. That should be fine.
