Description
Dianthus deltoides 'Brilliancy' - Maiden Pink Plants
'Brilliancy' (or Brilliant, it's the same plant) is a small alpine perennial that forms a slow-spreading carpet of ground cover approximately 20cm tall, its lush evergreen leaves effectively suppressing weeds.
It's most charming from mid-spring, when it bursts into life with striking red-crimson blossoms. The flowers feature slightly jagged edges on the petals, enhancing their beauty when observed at a close range.

Growing Dianthus Brilliancy
All it needs is full sun and a well drained soil that should be poorly fertile: gritty, sandy, or chalky is ideal. Too much soil fertility will result in fewer flowers and less dense foliage, so don't mulch them with rich organic matter: use grit or pea gravel instead.
Drought-tolerant once established.
Did You Know?
The word brilliant is derived from the Latin for beryl, beryllus, so it means to shine like a jewel. If anything, a Dianthus flower is brighter than beryl, so gemstones labelled "Dianthancy" would be a sure hit.
