Gallery Leonardo: Big Pastel Flowers on a Tiny Plant

Gallery Leonardo produces flowers up to 20cm across on a plant that tops out at 50cm tall. That's almost comically out of proportion, and it's part of the charm. The blooms are a soft pastel pink with a green and yellow centre that gives each flower a fresh, dewy quality. The effect is gentle and pretty rather than dramatic.

Named after Leonardo da Vinci and part of the Gallery series bred by Verwer for containers, Leonardo holds the RHS AGM. It's one of the larger-flowered varieties in the series, and the soft colour makes it the easiest to place in a mixed scheme. It flowers from June to November with no staking needed.

The short, branching stems mean it's a garden display dahlia rather than a cutting dahlia. In a pot, it's one of the best dahlias money can buy.

Planting Partners for Leonardo

Pastel pink and green centres suit soft, romantic schemes. Plant Leonardo in front of Gerrie Hoek (shell pink waterlily, 120cm behind) for a pink gradient that runs from border front to mid-height. Gallery Art Fair (white, same compact height) alongside keeps the scheme cool. Pale Heuchera and silver Stachys at the border edge complete the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the flowers really be 20cm on a 50cm plant?

With good feeding and consistent watering, yes. The flower-to-plant ratio is part of what makes the Gallery series so striking in pots. Individual blooms can be almost as wide as the plant is tall.

Is Gallery Leonardo good for cutting?

The flowers are beautiful and last well in water, but the stems are short. It works for small posies and table centres, not tall vases. For a pink dahlia with long cutting stems, Gerrie Hoek (waterlily, 120cm) is a better choice.

What pot size does Gallery Leonardo need?

A pot of 20 to 25cm across with rich compost will work well. Feed fortnightly from June and water regularly. No staking needed. Our dahlias in pots guide covers container growing in detail.
