Description

Allium Aflatunense

Aflatunense is a great looking pink-purple Allium that holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

This ornamental onion is one of the most popular varieties, as well as being one of the latest flowering alliums and is available as individual bulbs or as part of our popular allium bulbs collection.

Sometimes confused with Purple Sensation alliums, Aflatunense's blooms are lighter purple/mauve in colour, offering dense globes of blooms and making for a spectacular showy display.

Its large umbels of spherical blooms are made up of up to 100 small star-shaped mauve flowers. With each firework-like umbel growing to 4 inches wide, it makes for a great focal point in the garden.

It flowers slightly later than most alliums, blooming in very late spring to early summer (into June). It is one of the shorter alliums too, standing on a stem up to 60cm in height.

Frost hardy and draught tolerant, its suitable for growing in containers and looks great when planted in the border. Consider growing them where the foliage of other herbaceous plants can camouflage the leaves once they wither after flowering.

Works excellently with other taller alliums when the slight variation of sizes and colour adds interest to the garden.

For other options, see our full range of allium bulbs for sale.

Why We Like it

  • A stand out variety with an architectural form
  • Very reliable

How to Plant Alliums

  • Plant in autumn
  • Can tolerate a small amount of shade but will flourish best in full sun
  • Plant bulbs 15cm deep, 10-15cm apart
  • A small spread of 10-25cm when fully grown
  • Likes fertile well drained soil. Add grit to heavier soils such to improve drainage.

Top Tip

  • Divide and replant older clumps in late summer, after flowering
