Description

Tulipa Yonina

A relative newcomer on the tulip scene, the Lily flowered Yonina tulip is rather memorable and utterly entrancing. Her long, slightly reflexed and pointed petals are a strong, clear pink which fade to a white edge. The central rib is also white so that the whole petal looks like a feather. The base of each petal is a violet colour that lifts Yonina from pretty to outstanding. The black stamens are noticeably apparent and give a muscularity to a flower that could otherwise have been seen as a bit girly. The leaves are slightly wider than many tulips which balances the overall plant. Browse all of our tulip bulbs.

Finding a spot for Yonina Tulips

Yonina would look very decorative in pots because at 45 cm she is strong enough to withstand the wind and a mass together would look like a wonderful kaleidoscope of colours and textures; a purple glazed pot would look brilliant! Failing that most planters would suit, pehaps with the exception of terracotta. For the patient amongst you, Smyrnium perfoliatum makes a wonderful companion to late season tulips with its airy, lime green flowers, but it takes two years to get there. More immediate friends would be for Yonina to emerge, Aphrodite like, from a mound of Artemisia ludoviciana, the silver leaved Western Mugwort. Naturally Yonina will also look fantastic with like minded Claudia and the classic White Triumphator. If this pointed, starry style of lily is not to your taste, have a look at the more rococo double tulips like Peach Blossom or the Parrot tulips, both Blue and Black for something eye-catching and different.

Did you know?

Yonina is a really popular girl's name in Holland where this tulip was first cultivated. It was introduced into the market in 1994. Lily shaped tulips were very popular in the 1950s when the fashion was for cinched waists and hour glass figures, rather like this flower. They went out of fashion for a bit but are now all the vogue. Go Yonina!
