Description

Liriodendron Tulipifera

The Tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, is a big, stately tree with exotic flowers that are generously carried on even the lowest branches. The leaves are a unique shape, with four points and blunt head; they also turn a clean, deep yellow in autumn. The cup shaped, pale green petals are dashed with egg-yolk orange and the inner parts of the flower are like a tulip, but bigger and more prominent. Tulip trees will take about 10 years to begin flowering.
It's not a tree for a small garden, but we really recommend it if you have the space. It is suitable for inner city planting.

Growing Tulip Trees
These trees like a deep, rich soil and prefer it to be on the moist side. In the wild, they often grow next to water.
Your trees will reach about 30 metres in Britain.

Liriodendron tulipifera is native to Eastern USA. In warm, sunny Florida, tulip trees have been recorded as tall as 58 metres, but they won't get that big in our climate. The first trees were brought to Britain during the 1600's, probably by John Tradescant the Younger.
