This small variegated sedge is a brightly coloured filler plant for the front of the border, with a yellow-cream central band on each arching leaf, which have thin green margins. The foliage especially stands out in the early part of the year. As the name might suggest, it is evergreen.
Great in North-facing locations and patio pots.

Sedges are tough and shade-tolerant, great low filler plants. Their favourite soil is both moist and well drained: banks close to water are good. They are not ideal for dry rockeries, but with help can establish in quite dry, rocky places where they have shade, shelter, and access to some depth of soil that won't dry out easily: North-facing rockeries would be their first choice.
Shear 'Evergold' down to low mounds in early Spring to make way for new growth only when you feel it's needed: if the foliage looks brown and tattered at the tips, it's clearly time for a cut. In a sheltered location, you should not need to cut them every year.
The stripy evergreen foliage of this handsome grass makes a bold statement at the front of the border, or displayed in a pot. Its creamy variegated leaves will brighten up a shady area, or use it to line a path. Plant with hellebores and ferns, and its tufty, tussocky form looks good on a living wall too. It also makes a good companion plant to other Carex and Stipa tenuissima.
This sedge is a native of Honshu, the main island of Japan.
