Ever felt like you'd love to use prairie planting in your garden but some of the key plants were too big? Well, Verbena bonariensis Lollipop is perfect for you!
It has the same clusters of floating lavender-purple flowers as its parent, Verbena bonariensis, but has short, compact stems growing to half the height - just 60cm. Leaves are sparse and narrow, adding to the airy nature of the plant.
Browse all of our perennial plants.
The well-shaped plants have the same open habit with blooms that move seductively in the breeze from July to October.
Lollipop is a great all-rounder, suitable for windy gardens where its taller parents would snap. Prairie planting, as popularised by Piet Oudolf, is where any Verbena bonariensis comes to the fore - use it alongside grasses, late-flowering perennials such as Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Achilleas.
In the mixed border, Lollipop looks wonderful with mound-forming perennials such as geraniums. Unlike its parent plant, it is suitable for patio pots as it is so compact and for the wildlife garden, as it is loved by butterflies.
Lollipop can be borderline hardy, so may not be suitable for colder areas of the country. When the plant dies down in autumn, leave the stems to protect the crown and add a straw mulch.
Verbena flowers symbolise healing, creativity, and happiness. They are used for protection against harm and evil.
