Dark Spirit: The Near-Black Dahlia for Moody Borders
Some dahlias want to be noticed. Dark Spirit wants to be felt. The flowers are a deep burgundy-red so dark they're almost black, especially towards the centre, with velvety petals that curve inward to build a tight, spherical bloom. At 7 to 8cm across, the flowers are small enough to look elegant rather than heavy, and the plant produces them in quantity from July right through to November.
Don't make the mistake of planting it alone. Like all very dark flowers, Dark Spirit gets lost in autumn shadows unless it has something lighter to play against. Planted with the right companions, that near-black colour becomes the anchor that holds a whole scheme together. Without them, it disappears.
The plant is compact at 90cm with a narrow 45cm spread, sturdy stems and dark green foliage. It's well suited to pots and doesn't need heavy staking. The flowers cut well and last nicely in a vase, and the dark colour makes them a favourite for moody late-summer arrangements and, yes, Halloween.
How to Use Dark Spirit in a Border
Dark Spirit needs contrast. The simplest approach: plant it alongside something pale. Cafe au Lait (milky coffee dinnerplate, much taller) lets the near-black flowers sit in front like dark punctuation against soft ruffles. White Onesta (white waterlily-form decorative, 90cm) is a closer height match. For a warm scheme rather than a dark one, try it with Golden Sceptre (bright yellow ball) and the heritage apricot of Preference (semi-cactus, introduced in 1911). If you want the full moody border, combine Dark Spirit with Moor Place (deep purple pompon, bred in 1955 and still going) and Rip City (deep red semi-cactus spikes), but add a pale grass or silver foliage to stop the scheme becoming a dark hole.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dark Spirit actually black?
Very close. In strong sunlight you'll see the deep burgundy-red underneath, but in shade or evening light the flowers read as near-black. The petals have a velvety texture that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which adds to the dark impression. True black doesn't exist in dahlias, but Dark Spirit is as close as you'll get without a paintbrush.
Will Dark Spirit grow in a pot?
Well, actually. At 90cm with small flowers and a narrow spread, it's one of the better dahlias for containers. Use a pot at least 30cm across and deep, with rich compost. Feed fortnightly from June. It looks striking in a dark glazed pot with nothing else competing for attention. Our dahlias in pots guide covers container growing in detail.
Is Dark Spirit a pompon dahlia?
Often confused for one, but no. It's classified as a small decorative. The flowers are spherical because the petals curve inward, but they don't have the tight spiral structure of a true ball or pompon. The types of dahlias guide explains the difference.
What should I pair it with for flower arranging?
Dark Spirit is the anchor bloom in a dark arrangement. Pair it with Cafe au Lait or Arbatax (white with pink edges) for contrast. Add grasses or seedheads for texture. The small flower size means it doesn't overwhelm a vase the way a dinnerplate does. Five or six stems of Dark Spirit with three stems of something pale and a few wispy grasses makes a very good autumn arrangement.
When should I deadhead?
Regularly, and it matters more with dark dahlias than light ones. Spent blooms of Dark Spirit turn brown-black and are harder to spot against the dark buds behind them, so double-check when you deadhead. Cut back to the next bud junction. The plant will keep flowering until the frosts if you stay on top of it. Full growing advice in our dahlia growing guide.
