Climbing Plants Collection – Three Climbers, One Ready-Made Scheme
This is a collection for anyone who wants to cover a wall, fence or pergola with climbing plants but isn't sure where to start. We choose one clematis, one honeysuckle and one ivy — three plants that between them give you flowers in summer (clematis), scent in the evening (honeysuckle), and year-round evergreen cover (ivy). Plant them side by side so they mingle together, or space them along a fence so each has its own section. Either way, you get a properly varied planting from a single order.
We select the specific varieties based on what is growing well and looking strong at the time of dispatch. That means you get the best of what is available, not a fixed selection that might include something past its prime. We cannot accept requests for specific varieties — the whole point is that we pick the ones worth planting right now.
Where to Plant a Climbing Collection
Any fence, wall or pergola with reasonable light will work. The ivy handles shade, the honeysuckle prefers some sun for flowering, and the clematis wants its head in the light with its roots cool and shaded — which the other two plants conveniently provide. A 3–4 metre run of fence is ideal for three plants spaced about a metre apart. For a pergola, plant one on each leg and let them climb and mingle overhead. If you want to choose your own climbers individually, browse the full climbing plant range — we stock over 120 varieties of clematis, honeysuckle, jasmine, and more.
Why Ashridge?
We grow our climbing plants ourselves, in peat-free compost using biological controls. Every plant is guaranteed. Delivered by next-day courier, backed by Which? Best Plant Supplier, and a Somerset team who know these plants personally. See the full climbing range.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I choose which varieties are in the collection?
No — we select the best varieties available at the time of dispatch. This means you always get strong, healthy plants at the right stage for planting. If you have specific varieties in mind, order them individually from our climbing plant range.
Will these climbing plants grow in shade?
The ivy will grow in full shade. The honeysuckle and clematis prefer some sun, particularly for flowering. A fence that gets a few hours of sun during the day is fine for all three. A completely sunless north-facing wall would suit the ivy but limit the flowers from the other two.
Do I need to provide support?
The ivy climbs by aerial roots and can grip bare masonry. The clematis and honeysuckle need something to hold onto — trellis, wires, or netting fixed to the fence or wall. Install the support before planting. Our clematis growing guide and honeysuckle guide cover support options in detail.
