Orange Emperor: A Single Dahlia for Pollinators and Cutting
Orange Emperor is a single dahlia, which means one ring of broad orange petals around an open, visible central disc. It's the simplest dahlia form and, like all singles, one of the best for pollinators. Bees and hoverflies can reach the nectar easily, which they can't do on fully double types where petals cover the centre.
At 100cm with strong stems and 10cm flowers, it's a practical border plant that doubles as a cut flower. The rich orange colour and open form give it a natural, wildflower quality that suits cottage gardens and prairie-style planting as well as formal borders.
Where to Plant Orange Emperor
The rich orange works in hot schemes and pollinator borders. Plant alongside Bishop of Llandaff (scarlet single, dark foliage) for two pollinator-friendly dahlias in warm colours. Pooh (red and yellow collarette, open centre) continues the wildlife-friendly theme. Helenium and Echinacea are natural companions for a pollinator border.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Orange Emperor good for bees?
Excellent. Single dahlias are the best dahlia type for pollinators because the open centre gives bees direct access to nectar and pollen. Fully double dahlias block this access with extra petals.
Will Orange Emperor grow in a pot?
At 100cm it's manageable in a large container with staking. Our pots guide covers container growing.
What's a single dahlia?
A dahlia with one ring of petals around an open centre, showing the stamens and central disc. It's the simplest and most natural-looking dahlia form. Our types guide explains all the classifications. Full growing advice in our dahlia growing guide.
