Paperwhite Daffodil – The Most Intensely Fragrant Narcissus

Paperwhites have the strongest scent of any daffodil — not just strong, but filling-the-room strong. Each stem carries a cluster of ten or more dainty white flowers, and the fragrance is sweet, heady, and unmistakable. They are a species narcissus (Division 13), which means they are closer to their wild Mediterranean ancestors than the garden hybrids, and that wild heritage gives them their extraordinary perfume.

They are popular for forcing indoors over Christmas — plant bulbs in October, keep cool and dark for three weeks, then bring into the light and the flowers appear within six to eight weeks. Outdoors, they flower from March in sheltered spots. At 35cm, they suit the front of a sunny border or a container on a warm patio.
