Prince George Clematis – White Rosettes All Summer Long
Prince George produces white semi-double flowers that open as tight rosettes and gradually flatten as they age, revealing a subtle blue-green flush at the centre. Each bloom is 10–14cm across, and the doubling gives them a density that single white clematis cannot match. They look as if someone has crumpled white silk and let it slowly unfold. The flowering season runs from June through September — unusually long for a double clematis, which often deliver one spectacular burst and then stop.
At 2m it stays compact enough for a fence panel, a pillar, or a modest obelisk. The white flowers work on any wall colour and any aspect, though a position out of scorching afternoon sun will keep the petals fresh for longer. Like all large-flowered clematis, it climbs by wrapping its leaf stalks around thin supports — wire, trellis slats, or string. It cannot grip bare masonry and needs something to hold onto.
White Clematis in the Garden Design
White flowers are the connective tissue of a planting scheme. Prince George planted beside Warsaw Nike (deep velvety purple, Group 3, AGM) creates a classic contrast on a fence or wall. For a softer mood, pair it with Nelly Moser (pale pink with a deeper bar, Group 2, AGM) — the two share a pruning group, which simplifies maintenance. At ground level, lavender provides root shade and fragrance, and the purple spikes complement the white blooms above.

Frequently Asked Questions
How should I prune Prince George clematis?
Light prune in February. Trim each stem back to the first pair of strong buds from the top. Prince George flowers on old and new wood, so a hard cut would sacrifice the early doubles — the best flowers of the season. If the plant becomes tangled or neglected, you can cut harder as a one-off renovation, accepting that the following spring will be quieter. Our pruning guide has the detail.
How deep should I plant Prince George?
Plant 8–10cm below pot level. This promotes underground buds that can regenerate the plant if the top growth is damaged by wilt or by accident. Full instructions in our planting depth guide.
Will Prince George grow in a pot?
At 2m with a compact habit, it works in a large container (40cm minimum). Use rich, moisture-retentive compost, plant 8–10cm below the surface, and feed fortnightly from April. Provide a support — an obelisk, a cane tripod, or trellis fixed to a wall behind the pot.
Is Prince George resistant to clematis wilt?
No. As a large-flowered hybrid, it carries the usual risk. Deep planting is the best insurance. If wilt-resistance is a priority, the viticella types (Étoile Violette, Polish Spirit) are virtually immune, though the flowers are smaller.
What aspect suits Prince George?
Any aspect except deep shade. East-facing walls are particularly good for white clematis — morning sun with afternoon shade keeps the flowers clean and fresh. South-facing walls work too, but the blooms may scorch in prolonged heatwaves. North-facing walls get less flower, though the plant will grow. Full planting and care guidance is in our clematis growing guide.
