Prince George Clematis – White Rosettes All Summer Long

Prince George produces white semi-double flowers that open as tight rosettes and gradually flatten as they age, revealing a subtle blue-green flush at the centre. Each bloom is 10–14cm across, and the doubling gives them a density that single white clematis cannot match. They look as if someone has crumpled white silk and let it slowly unfold. The flowering season runs from June through September — unusually long for a double clematis, which often deliver one spectacular burst and then stop.

At 2m it stays compact enough for a fence panel, a pillar, or a modest obelisk. The white flowers work on any wall colour and any aspect, though a position out of scorching afternoon sun will keep the petals fresh for longer. Like all large-flowered clematis, it climbs by wrapping its leaf stalks around thin supports — wire, trellis slats, or string. It cannot grip bare masonry and needs something to hold onto.

How should I prune Prince George clematis?

Light prune in February. Trim each stem back to the first pair of strong buds from the top. Prince George flowers on old and new wood, so a hard cut would sacrifice the early doubles — the best flowers of the season. How deep should I plant Prince George?

Will Prince George grow in a pot?
