Hebe 'Purple Pixie' Plants. 2 Litre Pots

Hebe Purple Pixie has dainty purple flowers that, like its sibling Pink Pixie, stand out from their green calyxes and deep burgundy stems. In ideal conditions, they have a fabulously lengthy season, often lasting from summer until the first frosts. It is bushy and upright to about 60cm high by 60cm wide.

Hebes are only delivered pot-grown, year round.

Growing Purple Pixie Hebes

Suitable for any well-drained soil, they tolerate partial shade well. They are hardy across most of the UK, but in cold areas of the North and Scotland, they are best grown in pots that can be moved into shelter from dry winter winds. In other areas outside the South West, covering them during an extended period of frost or snow is recommended to prevent cosmetic damage, but not essential.

Hebes prefer poor soil, so do not add any of our rich composts to the soil before planting: sand would be better in most normal topsoils. In heavy clay soil, churn the ground over to add a bit of gravel & grit (not sand) to give their roots breathing space, likewise add grit to a planting mix for Hebes in pots.

They don't like being hard pruned, so give them a light trim in spring to keep them tight and bushy. If you need to tidy a stray stem, prune it back as little as possible, to a good-looking bud.

In Your Garden Design

You can use this stunning plant in any planting design since it is such a versatile number, but it particularly works in a relaxed, cottage garden setting. It is a good ‘doer’, sporting purple flowers for months on end from late spring until well into the autumn adding structure to any border or collection of pots. Would work well next to a pink geranium such as Psilostemon and near to the ever popular Verbena Bonariensis. For a zingy planting scheme why not use this with Anthemis Sancti-Johannis and Crocosmia ‘Emily Mackenzie’.

Did You Know?

Also sold as Mohawk, it was bred by the founder of Bransford Webbs Plant Company, John Tooby (1913-2002) and introduced onto the market in 1998.

It is the parent of Pink Pixie, which came into being as a sport, a chance variant growth on one charmed Purple Pixie parent plant.
