Description

Rosa Mundi / Versicolor Variegated Shrub Roses

The oldest and best known striped rose, Rosa Mundi carries light crimson flowers striped with white. A very showy plant, use her to create spectacular effects in any garden. If you want a bit of fun, Rosa Mundi also makes an excellent low hedge to about 150cms (4 ft high).

Also known as the French Panaché rose, and formerly classified as Rosa x damascena. Recorded since 1581, it seems that the name comes from Rosamond Clifford, the mistress of Henry II, who died in 1176. On her tombstone is engraved the epitaph Hic jacet in tumolo rosa mundi, non rosa munda: Here, in this tomb, lies a rose of the world, not a pure rose.

It was inducted into the World Federation of Rose Societies Convention old rose hall of fame in 2009, and has a fistful of other rose society awards, in addition to its Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
