Our soft fruit range includes raspberry canes that fruit through from June into October. Although grown internationally, raspberries are a rather British fruit with so much breeding being done in Scotland and Kent (any raspberry called either Glen something or Malling something was bred in the UK). However, whichever varieties you choose, all our raspberry plants are certified stock, grown from virus-tested parent material in the UK are guaranteed and are ready to order now.
Most raspberries fruit on the wood produced the previous summer. These are "Summer Fruiting Raspberries" categorised as Early, Mid and Late season. Autumn Fruiting Raspberries are shorter, bushier, need much less support and fruit on the current season's growth albeit only in autumn.
There is more detailed information in the soft fruit advice section of this site, but here are some fairly concise answers questions often asked about raspberries:
Raspberries will grow just about anywhere as long as:
Over the years, British breeders have produced some of the greatest raspberry varieties you can buy. So the choice is wide. every year. Here are a few of the best:
Raspberry canes are best planted barerooted - once they are dormant - at any time between late-October and March when the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged. Patio varieties such as Ruby Beauty - which is container grown - can be planted at any time they are not carrying fruit.
Improve the soil with loads of rotted manure/garden compost. Summer-fruiting varieties need permanent support with upright posts 1.8m (6ft) high when in the ground. Strain wires between posts 60cm (2ft) apart. Plant your canes 40-50 cm apart and leave 1.5-2m (4-6ft) between rows. Autumn-fruiting raspberry canes should be planted about 60cm apart in each direction (and do not need stakes and wire). In both cases, plant canes about 7-8cm (3in) deep, firming them in very gently and cut the canes to 25 cm tall to promote more fruiting shoots. Water well.
Mulch around your canes in spring using well-rotted manure or compost. Water well in dry weather. Remove any suckers that are too far away from the row (20 cms or so). Don't forget to net summer fruiting varieties.
Summer-fruiting raspberries. In November, prune out the canes that carried fruit at ground level. Leave 6-8 of the new season's canes per plant to fruit next year. Tie these in about 10cm (4in) apart.
Autumn-fruiting raspberries. Simple - cut the whole plant down to the ground somewhere between December and February.
Hugely, and the fresher they are the better they are for you. Raspberries are very high indeed in fibre and vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, potassium and folic acid while being low in calories...
