Fritz Nobis Shrub Roses

Fritz Nobis is a very vigorous modern shrub rose with soft rose pink blooms flushed salmon with perhaps 20 or more blooms on one stem. The deliciously clove-scented flowers are beautifully formed and produced in abundance during the summer. The flowers are followed in the autumn by an impressive number of dark orange red hips. It is a very neat shrub with graceful arching stems and small grey green leaves and is very easy to grow and reasonably disease resistant. Great for your garden

Fritz Nobis, bred in Germany by Kordes and introduced to the UK in 1940, is one of the most useful and lovely of shrub roses. It is easy to grow, reasonably disease resistant, will tolerate shade and impoverished soil. Its versatility means it can be grown as a specimen, in a rose bed, in borders and with mixed planting. Its graceful arching and dense growth habit even makes it perfect for a lovely loose scented hedge. It can be grown in a large tub as long as a good feeding regime is followed; replacing the top few inches of soil with fresh compost once a year and using a slow release fertilizer.

Trivia

Bred in Germany by Wilhelm Kordes. He started breeding roses in a small way in 1887 when he created his own rose garden in Holstein. Things developed very quickly with the, by then, family business becoming W Kordes Sohne, probably the largest breeder of roses in the 20th century. The company have research and propagation centres all over Europe with their headquarters still in Germany. Other than Fritz, one of their most famous roses is Rosa Iceberg.
