Description

Narcissus Anniversary Gift Bulbs (Group 2, Large Cupped)

Narcissus Anniversary Gift is a classic daffodil. The early-spring flowers are a glorious, heart-lifting sight: soft, pale cream petals with a jaunty lemon-yellow trumpet. What a way to welcome in the joys of the new gardening season! It's a variety that will keep going, year after year (hence the name, probably: it'll be a lovely reminder each spring). The sturdy stems reach around 40cm, so it's tall enough to be eyecatching without the risk of wind damage. An armful cut and brought indoors will cheer up the kitchen no end, and they'll last well in a vase. There are more glorious spring daffodils to consider here.

Growing Anniversary Gift

Plant bulbs in autumn, at around 10cm deep. You can pack them in to pots to create a display with impact, or scatter them over lawns and flowerbeds in natural drifts by throwing handfuls into the air and planting where they land. They prefer fertile, well-drained soil, so dig in some garden compost if your soil needs it. Once the foliage has died back in late spring, deadhead the flowers.

Planting companions for Anniversary Gift

Daffodils look fabulous in a cottage-garden scheme, strung like tinsel through borders among other early-flowering bulbs such as grape hyacinths and another contrasting daffodil such as the dainty all-yellow Tete a Tete. This is also a daffodil that naturalises brilliantly in lawns and around deciduous trees, so plant in generous drifts, scattering bulbs liberally to create a scene with glorious spring impact. In pots and window boxes, plant close together, underplanting with ivies perhaps, or mingling together with the rich blues of Iris reticulata.
