Description

L D Braithwaite™ David Austin Rose Plants

L D Braithwaite keeps on flowering all summer with minimal maintenance. The flowers are a vivid crimson with a background of matt, mid-green foliage, most of which stays in place over the winter. Each slightly cupped flower opens into a wide, flattened disc where the central petals erupt outwards. The effect is a delightful mass of rumpled, red petals. The scent is weak at first, but as the flower matures, it develops an Old Rose fragrance. All of our roses are chosen because they are outstanding to look at, and this one has an RHS AGM, so you know it is disease resistant and easy to grow as well.

The plant has spreading and bushy habit, and the stems are thorny.

Town Rose/Country Rose

This tough rose copes well with urban pollution.

Modern English shrub roses can be the cornerstone to a successful mixed border, because they flower prolifically for so long. This charmer should be placed mid border where its clear, crimson flowers will act like beacons all summer. Surround it with beautiful Salvia nemorosa Caradonna for a bed full of drama or any of our pale pink, white or blue Lavenders.

Keeping it in the family

David Austin personally recommends this rose. He named it after his father-in-law, Leonard Dudley Braithwaite, and it came to market in 1988. Other members of the family include his grand-daugher Charlotte and daughter Claire, both cultivars now being retired.

Planting Instructions

How to plant LD Braithwaite™ roses

If planting against a wall leave about 45cms (18") between plant and wall. Dig a hole deep enough to allow the graft to finish at soil level when planted and with plenty of room for the roots. Improve the soil from the hole by removing large stones, weeds, roots and other rubbish and mixing in about 25% by volume of well rotted compost or manure. Wet the roots and sprinkle with Rootgrow so it stays in contact with the roots. If planting a pot grown plant gently loosen some of the roots before planting.

Position your rose so the roots are spread out and it is set at approximately the same level in the soil as it was before being transplanted. The union should be level with the soil when you have finished planting. Backfill the hole with the planting mix, firming it down as you go. Water in thoroughly. Water again a day or two later and then keep watering in dry spells.

Prune in the winter and feed twice, first in spring then later in the summer.
