Description

Nuits de Young Shrub Rose

Nuits de Young shrub roses are a gorgeous mid-summer flowerer. The blooms are non-repeating, but unfurl into a wonderfully deep maroon purple flower with contrasting golden stamens and a heady unmissable scent. Fully opened the blooms display these deeply coloured, small, curved petals in a multiple tight layers, with a ring of lighter, sometimes white-flecked petals framing the bright yellow central stamens. Nuits de Young is not a large rose reaching around 3ft in height and spread when fully grown. The growth and foliage are neat and slender and are quite dark in colour. Careful thinning of the growth when pruning is rewarded when the plant flowers.

It is an old rose and lacks the repeat flowering of more modern varieties, but none can match it for colour or scent. Find a place for it in your rose border or at the back of a herbaceous border. Browse our range of UK grown roses or our other shrub rose bushes.

Great for your garden

Its unique and fascinating blooms will contrast and compliment many lighter-coloured summer flowerers. Its musky scent drifting across the summer patio will inspire and evoke memories of many lazy days spent simply basking or enjoying the company of others.

Did You Know?

It was bred in France in 1845 by Jean Laffaye (1795-1878). It was almost certainly in full bloom at the same time as SS Great Britain became the first screw propelled ship to sail the Atlantic. We haven't been able to find out who (or where?) the Young in the name refers to.
