Growing Chinese Windmill Palm
This drought tolerant, hardy tree will grow on the coast, but strong, cold winds tatter the foliage, so a sheltered site is recommended to maintain its appearance.
In exposed Northern locations, it is common to wrap it up in horticultural fleece for the winter to protect the leaves.
Any well drained soil in sun or partial shade.

One of the first specimens grown by Kew, planted around 1836, died within a few decades because they grew it in the tropical house, but the one they planted outdoors in 1849 is still there.
It was widely cultivated in Eastern Asia for fibre.
