Cafe au Lait Mixed: Three Dinnerplate Dahlias for the Price You'd Expect to Pay for Two

The Cafe au Lait family are the most Instagrammed dahlias in the world, and this collection gives you three of the four varieties in one pack. You get the original Cafe au Lait (milky coffee tones that shift through peach, buff and cream), Cafe au Lait Twist (cream with bold raspberry streaks), and Cafe au Lait Royal (the pinkest of the family, shifting from strawberry-milkshake to faded blush).

Planted together, the three varieties create a rolling palette of warm neutrals, soft pinks and raspberry accents. They're all the same height (100 to 120cm), all flower at the same time, and all produce the enormous 25cm dinnerplate blooms that made the Cafe au Lait name famous. For wedding flower growers, florists and anyone who wants a knockout dahlia border, this is the pack to start with.

All three need deep border soil and proper staking. They're big plants with big flowers and big appetites.

Planting the Collection

Space the three tubers about 75cm apart in a sunny border with rich, well-drained soil. They'll reach the same height and flower at the same time, so the colours blend naturally without you having to choreograph anything. For even more Cafe au Lait impact, add Cafe au Lait Supreme (the pure white sport, sold separately) for the full four-variety gradient. Smaller, darker dahlias in front, like David Howard (burnt orange, dark foliage, 90cm) or Cornel (deep maroon ball), provide contrast and structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which three varieties are included?

One tuber each of Cafe au Lait (original, shifting milky-coffee tones), Cafe au Lait Twist (raspberry streaks over cream), and Cafe au Lait Royal (dusky pink). Supreme (pure white) is available separately.

Can I grow the Cafe au Lait mixed collection in pots?

Not really. All three varieties grow to 100 to 120cm with 25cm flowers. They need deep border soil, generous feeding, and proper staking. They're too big, too hungry and too top-heavy for containers. For a Cafe au Lait in a softer, more manageable form, try Arbatax (white with pink edges, 90cm) individually. Our container guide covers what works in pots.

Are these good for wedding flowers?

The Cafe au Lait family is the dahlia for weddings. The shifting, romantic colour palette, the enormous flower size, and the strong cutting stems make them a florist's dream. Plant plenty and cut generously. Full planting advice in our dahlia growing guide.
