Rose Bon Bon – The Pink Double That Looks Like a Peony

Rose Bon Bon carries beautiful, soft rose-pink double flowers up to 8 cm across, the petals layered and curled like a miniature peony. It was the first separately coloured double Cosmos bipinnatus to be released, and it won a Fleuroselect Award for the achievement. The blooms have a fullness and complexity that single cosmos cannot match, and the colour is a gentle, pastel pink that works with almost anything. In a grey or zinc container with silver-leaved companions it looks wonderful. Cosmos and dahlias are close relatives, both from Mexico, both in the same botanical tribe, and looking at a fully double Rose Bon Bon you can see the family resemblance.

At 60–120 cm the height is variable, and in the right situation Rose Bon Bon can push towards the top of that range. Position it towards the middle of a border but keep it within reach. We have a stepping stone in our border so we can get to the cosmos without compacting the soil, because we cut from them about twice a week. It is a brilliant cutting flower as well as beautiful in the garden. All they need is sun, water, and well-drained soil, and given those you reap a reward in terms of flowers per square metre that is unmatched by any other plant you can grow in the UK. Cosmos of any variety ought to be in every child's first garden because they are the easiest plants to grow. They will also be in my last garden because they are so beautiful and rewarding.

Planting Partners for Cosmos Rose Bon Bon

Rose Bon Bon cuts a real dash planted in numbers by itself, but it also works well mixed with the other Double Clicks. Double Click Cranberries (deep cranberry-red) and Double Click Snow Puff (pure white) complete the series, and the three together give you a ready-made colour scheme of dark, pale, and mid-pink that works from the border to the vase.

Outside the cosmos family, Rose Bon Bon's pastel tones sit well with ornamental grasses like Stipa tenuissima, which adds movement and a tawny base tone. The soft pink also pairs beautifully with blue-purple salvias or verbena for a classic cottage garden combination.

Why Buy Your Cosmos Seedlings from Ashridge?

No contract growing, no outside suppliers. We buy in the best seed each year (cosmos does not come true from saved seed, so we source fresh) and hand-sow every plug at our Somerset nursery. Your plants are grown on and hardened off before dispatch. What you receive is a sturdy, garden-ready jumbo plug.

We dispatch by next-day courier from late April. If anything arrives damaged or fails to establish, our plant guarantee covers you. We are a small, family-run nursery and the people packing your order are the same ones who grew the plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall does Cosmos Rose Bon Bon grow?

Rose Bon Bon reaches 60–120 cm (2–4 ft), with height depending on conditions. In lean soil it stays shorter and sturdier. Plants at the taller end benefit from support put in at planting time. For full growing advice, see our cosmos growing guide.

Is Cosmos Rose Bon Bon good for cutting?

Rose Bon Bon is an excellent cut flower. The double blooms have more presence in a vase than single cosmos, and the soft pink suits almost any arrangement. Cut in the morning, take the stem to the first leaf joint, and expect 7–10 days in the vase. The more you cut, the more it flowers. A half-dozen plants in a cutting bed, harvested twice a week, will produce enough flowers to fill several vases and still leave plenty in the garden.

What is the difference between the Double Click cosmos varieties?

We sell three Double Clicks: Rose Bon Bon (soft rose-pink), Cranberries (deep cranberry-red), and Snow Puff (pure white). All share the same double form and height range. The difference is colour. Planted as a trio they make a complete cutting garden row. Browse the full range in our cosmos collection.

Can I grow Cosmos Rose Bon Bon in a pot?

Yes, though the variable height means it may need a large pot (10 litres) and support. The soft pink looks particularly good in a grey or galvanised container with silver-leaved companions at the base. Feed fortnightly with half-strength tomato fertiliser once buds appear. See our guide to growing cosmos in pots.

Will seedlings from Rose Bon Bon come true?

No. Cosmos can self-seed in mild areas, but seedlings from double varieties like Rose Bon Bon are unpredictable. Many revert to single flowers, and the colour may drift. For reliable doubles in the same soft pink, start fresh with named plugs each spring.
