Apple Tree Varieties with Frost Resistant Flowers frost resistant

While we have a huge list of apple trees for sale, some varieties are better suited for areas (roughly south of Leeds) that habitually suffer from late spring frosts and/or are in a frost pocket or cold pool valley.

Apple trees are incredibly hardy and can stand much colder weather than you will ever see in the UK. However their flowers can be damaged in freezing weather making pollination impossible and so preventing them from cropping. So the lists below contains some varieties of apple tree that are better suited to cold spots

By the way, the actual damage from frost is caused if frozen plant tissues defrost too quickly. So a simple solution for all but the coldest conditions, is to plant your fruit trees either against a west facing wall or in a position where they get no morning sun. By the time the sum gets to the flowers, the air temperature shoudl have risen sufficiently for them to have thawed naturally and safely.

N.B. If you live in the North or Scotland, some of the trees below may work for you but we suggest you also take a look at our full list of Apple Trees for the North & Scotland.
