Description

Polystichum polyblepharum, Japanese Lace / Tassel Fern. 2 Litre Pot Grown Plants

The award-winning Polystichum polyblepharum is a highly attractive and exceptionally hardy evergreen fern. Its large, feathery fronds are handsome and glossy, arranged in a neat shuttlecock-like rosette.

A well-behaved, low-maintenance fern which is equally at home in a border or container. Very stiff, erect fronds give it a bold, architectural presence, suitable for both modern and traditional planting styles. Use in a mixed border or rock garden to provide a contrasting texture for broad-leaves and grasses.

Widely considered to be one of the finest of the hardy evergreen ferns. When young and unfurling its fronds are a yellowish green and covered in golden hairs, not dissimilar to those of a tree fern. When mature these are dark and glossy, and stand tall, spreading and proud. This is an exceptionally easy and low maintenance way to achieve year-round structure and presence in the garden.

Ferns are delivered pot-grown, year round.

Growing Japanese Lace Ferns

This shade-loving and hardy fern is not fussy about soil quality, it only needs moisture and good drainage to thrive.
Well established plants are quite tolerant of dry conditions, but they much prefer moist and cool soil.

Clean off tatty fronds in early Spring and remove dead ones at any time to allow the light to reach the remaining ones.

Polystichum are generally pest free, and easy to grow and care for.  You might occasionally need to tackle problems such as the fungal disease Taphrina wettsteiniana, but good gardening practices, such as appropriate weeding and feeding, together with our range of organic garden products, will help keep your ferns looking at their most healthy and beautiful.

In Your Garden Design

Polystichum polyblepharum can help transform a dull shady border to a lush display bursting with different forms and textures. Plant closely with other foliage plants such as heuchera, phormium, carex, ivy and a few other hardy evergreen ferns. Add Trachycarpus fortunei, and some bamboo for height and vertical interest, and your verdant paradise is complete!

Did You Know?

Poly-stichum means many rows of spores, and poly-blepharum means many-eyelashed.

It belongs to Dryopteridaceae, also known as the shield fern family. Other notable members include dryopteris (the wood fern), and cyrtomium (the holly fern). Polystichum polyblepharum originates from South Korea and Japan.
