Dahlia Labyrinth: Sunset Colours, Dark Stems, and a Brand-New AGM
Labyrinth is a large decorative dahlia in sunset orange and rose-pink, carried on distinctive mahogany stems that add to the warm palette before you even reach the flowers. The 18cm blooms have the layered, maze-like complexity that earns the name: petals arranged in overlapping spirals, with the colour shifting from warmer orange at the centre to cooler rose-pink at the edges. It's the kind of flower that rewards close looking.
It received the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2023, making it one of the newest AGM holders in the dahlia world. At 100cm with a 70cm spread, it's a manageable plant that doesn't need the serious scaffolding of the biggest dinnerplates. The mahogany stems are strong, and the flowers hold themselves up well.
Labyrinth is the second-highest-volume search term in our dahlia range after Cafe au Lait. It deserves the attention.
Planting Partners for Labyrinth
The sunset tones make Labyrinth a natural centrepiece for warm autumn schemes. Plant with David Howard (burnt orange, dark bronze foliage, 90cm) for a warm pairing where both plants have ornamental stems. Brown Sugar (paprika ball, 90cm) picks up the warm tones in a tighter, more geometric form. For darker contrast, Dark Spirit (near-black decorative, 90cm) anchors the scheme. The Labyrinth family also includes Red Labyrinth (deeper red-pink) and Twotone Labyrinth (lilac-pink and white) for a graduated colour range in the same flower form.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the 2023 AGM mean?
The RHS Award of Garden Merit is given after extensive trialling, confirming a plant performs reliably across a range of UK garden conditions. Labyrinth received it in 2023, which is recent enough to reflect current growing and testing standards. It's a strong endorsement of garden performance.
Is Labyrinth good for cutting?
Very. The 18cm flowers are a striking size for arrangements, the mahogany stems look good left visible, and the sunset colours mix beautifully with other warm autumn dahlias. Cut only fully open blooms, early in the morning.
Will Labyrinth grow in a pot?
At 100cm with 18cm flowers, it's on the edge. A large pot (at least 35cm) with staking and regular feeding will work, but it's happier in a border. For a warm-toned dahlia better suited to pots, Sylvia (warm orange ball, 80cm) is more compact. Our container guide covers the options.
Are Red Labyrinth and Twotone Labyrinth related?
They share the same large decorative flower form but in different colour combinations. Red Labyrinth is deeper red and pink. Twotone Labyrinth is cooler lilac-pink and white. Plant all three together for a beautiful colour graduation.
Does Labyrinth need staking?
At 100cm with 18cm flowers, a support ring or sturdy cane is sensible. The mahogany stems are strong but heavy rain will weigh down the blooms. Put supports in at planting time. Full growing advice in our dahlia growing guide.
