Soleil Vertical Climbing Roses

Said to be one of the best of the yellow climbing roses, Soleil Vertical is indeed a sun beam! It's a fast-growing modern climber to 2.4m x 1.8m, with exceptional disease resistance: ideal for beginners and places where other roses have struggled.

Masses of large, frilled, deep sulphur-yellow, loosely double, cupped blooms keep on coming from June to winter. They're an old-fashioned style, up to 10-12cm, bursting with up to 40 petals each and formed in small bunches over the stems. Held against the dark, glossy green foliage, the burnt orange buds make quite an impact.

Its lovely, medium strength fragrance has hints of citrus and tea rose.

Growing Soleil Vertical Roses

It is a good size for covering relatively big areas, like walls, pergolas and arches. You can grow it in very large containers, but be prepared to water it a lot.

Roses need to be well watered during their first year until their roots get established. They are relatively shallow-rooted, so the roots need to be coaxed out into the surrounding soil away from the original planting hole.

Even when established, a good soaking once a week in a dry summer will greatly benefit your plants, greedy things that they are, along with a regular high-potash feeding during the growing season and a general fertiliser before that in the spring.

Prune back to healthy buds in late winter for strong growth. Training climbing roses is important - gently tie in main stems horizontally, as this encourages flowering shoots to grow vertically. Deadhead regularly in summer for continuous flower production.

Planting Companions for Soleil Vertical

Those lovely yellow blooms contrast nicely with late-flowering clematises, such as the purple Etoile Violette. If you'd rather extend the flowering season, add a variety like Clematis Frankie, with blue flowers from March-May and decorative seedheads.

The yellow flowers look particularly striking against dark, evergreen hedges, where they really stand out at dawn and dusk.

In a walled garden, it makes a perfect backdrop to herbaceous or mixed borders full of pinks and reds.
