Serbian Gold is the most popular variety due to its early cropping and large size, but Meeches Prolific and Vranja are just as good.
They are extremely hardy, but do need full sun for the fruit to ripen.
Please note that Quince fruit are unusual in that there is a significant difference in size between the fruit of a young tree and a mature tree: the biggest fruit come from the oldest trees.
How do I eat Quince Fruit?
Quince are almost impossible to eat raw, they are only for cooking.
The easiest way to eat a Quince is to scrub it clean, don't peel it yet, and par-boil it in a small saucepan covered by 1/2 inch of water, which should take 15 to 30 minutes depending on its size. It's ready when you can push a knife through it as easily as a ripe pear.
Allow the quince to cool in the water it boiled in, then take it out and peel it if you are eating it as-is, or leave the skin on if you are making one of the delicacies below.
Quinces make fantastic jellies and jams, and can be made into membrillo, a quince 'cheese' to accompany conventional cheeses as well as sweet dishes (good with yoghurt) or as a base to a fruit tart.
They can be added to pies and stews and are particularly good roasted with dark meats and game (pheasant in particular).
