Native Hedging Plants

There are more species of native hedging in the UK than one might at first expect. Because many hedge plants are born, live, reproduce and then die in the same spot, the age of the plants in a hedge is not necessarily an indicator of how old it is.There are hedgerows today that were probably planted before the Battle of Hastings but the plants in them are not the originals but descendents of specimens planted over 1000 years ago. Instead the best way to age a hedge is to look at the number of species it contains since over a period of time nature has a wonderful way of creating diversity. So seeds are borne on the wind or in bird droppings or on animals feet. Where they come to rest in an existing hedge, they can grow relatively undisturbed. So the more variety in a hedge, generally the older it is.
