THIS SECTION IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY - WE NO LONGER SELL HOARY MORNING AS IT IS EXTREMELY PRONE TO CANKER ON MODERN ROOTSTOCKS.
Hoary Morning Apple trees produce really classic looking cooking apples, large and flat with a yellow tinged green colour that can be overrun by red stripes and a bloom of little white specks. The flesh of the apples is not especially interesting when eaten raw, though it is less acidic than most other cooking apples. When cooked, it becomes markedly sweeter and keeps its shape nicely. A Hoary Morning apple tree is pretty vigorous and has constant, good sized crops from year to year. Being very scab resistant, this is a wise choice for the organic farmer. It was raised in Somerset in the early 1800s. It is good to pick in early October.
If in doubt about pollination, especially if you have several types of apple tree, go for a crab apple like Golden Hornet. Otherwise, Hoary Morning is in the mid-season flowering category and so could be pollinated by any of the fertile Trees- in the Apple Tree Pollination guide, especially other Trees- in the same category.
