Does best in full sun or partial shade in a fertile, well-drained soil. Grow in pots as a feature plant. It is half hardy, so will need winter fleece protection in colder places, especially young plants.
In Your Garden Design
These make a wonderfully architectural focal point for a patio or terrace in a large pot, or group in borders with other exotics and purple and toning plants, such as gingers, dahlias, fatsia, hemerocallis and sedums. They add drama to the garden combined with good with hot colour combinations so select bright of canna lilies and startling crocosmia, or soften with low bedding plants to let the cordyline stand out. They can give a garden a tropical feel and are excellent in small gardens for having a feel of trees there.
Did You Know?
Also known as the cabbage palm and native to Australia and New Zealand, Cordyline australis is not a true palm, which are Arecaceae, but is closely related to yucca and agave in the Agavaceae family - cousins of asparagus.
